Sumita Shah has dedicated her career to improving public financial management, and is passionate about supporting organisations around the world to achieve their full potential. As a senior leader with substantial experience in audit & assurance, corporate governance, financial management, financial reporting and regulatory matters, Sumita has particular expertise in public finance management & strategic financial leadership; development of grants assurance frameworks; and local public audit.
Sumita is an ICAEW Chartered Accountant (ACA), a CIPFA Chartered Public Finance Accountant (CPFA), and a member of the Association of Accounting Technicians (MAAT). She is an ADR Group Accredited Mediator for civil and commercial and workplace dispute resolution. She is a member of the International Advisory Group of the Public Finance by Women and is a mentor on PFW's Global Mentoring Programme.
Sumita has developed extensive international networks through years of working collaboratively with fellow professionals throughout the world. She has participated in numerous high-profile events, delivering and facilitating workshops and training programmes.
Sumita’s 35+ year career includes being a practicing public sector auditor with the UK Audit Commission, before joining ICAEW in 2001 where, for many years, she developed and led a significant proportion of its public sector activities. She recently worked as an Executive Director on a part-time short-term contract. with the Confederation of Asian and Pacific Accountants (CAPA), a regional accountancy body based in the Asia Pacific Region and an IFAC Network Partner.
Through her ICAEW role, Sumita was previously a member of the CAPA Public Sector Financial Management Committee, the UK’s Ministry of Health, Communities and Local Government’s Local Audit Delivery Board and its Local Audit Sub-Group. Through her CAPA role, Sumita also participated on various IFAC panels (PAO Advisory Group and MOSAIC Steering Committee). She also previously held Board level positions with three charities and was a member of the Crisis at Christmas Steering Group. She has been a judge for the Women in City, Future Finance Leaders Awards Panels for 2016 and 2017.
Sumita has a long history of volunteering in humanitarian settings and is founder of various social media hubs providing strategic leadership, operational and logistical support to grassroots agencies and volunteers in emergency situations. She mentors long-term volunteers, provides advice and guidance to them and delivers training to new volunteers. She is an observer member on a UNHCR Greece National Communications with Communities Working Group. Sumita is also a Mental Health First Aider Instructor and MHFAider with MHFA England.
Sumita is a keen trekker and has carried out a number of charity treks including to Machu Picchu (Peru), Kilimanjaro (Tanzania), Everest Base Camp and Mera Peak (Nepal). She has also organised group walking holidays in both the UK and overseas locations.
